Ron "Pigpen" McKernan was born on September 8, 1945, in San Bruno, California, USA, and tragically passed away on March 8, 1973, in Corte Madera, California, at the young age of 27.
Pigpen was a prominent early member of the Grateful Dead, known for his distinctive bluesy voice and his skills on the harmonica and keyboard. While he was with the band from 1965 until his unfortunate passing in 1973, Pigpen's repertoire of songs where he took on lead vocals was relatively limited compared to other members. Nevertheless, he made a lasting impact with his passionate renditions of blues classics and covers, such as "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," "Turn On Your Lovelight," "Midnight Hour," and "Hard to Handle." He also contributed his vocal talent to a few original compositions like "Easy Wind" and "Two Souls in Communion," leaving a significant imprint on the Grateful Dead's early sound.
Pigpen's contribution to the Grateful Dead was integral in infusing the band's music with a raw, bluesy energy. His live performances, particularly on songs like "Turn On Your Lovelight," were known for their extended improvisations and are remembered as some of the band's most memorable moments. Despite his relatively small number of lead vocal tracks, Pigpen's influence on the Grateful Dead's early sound and their live performances played a vital role in shaping the band's legacy.
